Those spurs aren't necessarily associated with venom though, David.  This is
presently only known to be a male platypus eccentricity.  Male ehidnas have
such spurs but they aren't in the least venomous.  Consequently, there's not
much reason to assume Meso mammal ankle spurs were connected with venom.
