In my opinion, Hall Train has nailed this all down.  His animated 
Tyrannosaurus is the best I have seen. He's restored the hatchlings  in white 
down. Later 
they have a darker plumage. The adults have the tuberculed  hide. His work 
never seems to get credit it's due. Perhaps we tend to miss the  subtlties.
