FWIW, I recall something I read once (maybe in Dinosaurs of North America).
There was a picture from Serengeti National Park of various animals around a
watering hole, with the largest being an elephant. The author claimed that
a comparable scene from the Cretaceous(?) would have contained forty times
as many animals, the average size being about elephant size. I always
thought that was impressive, although I don't recall how the figure was
calculated.
