1933 Kong "T. rex" actually an Allosaurus?

To all Dinolisters,

While skimming the new Merian C. Cooper biography in
the bookstore today I came across an interesting
tidbit. The big theropod Kong fought in the 1933 film
has been generally thought to be a T. rex. In the
M.C. Cooper biography, however, Cooper states that the
dinosaur was an Allosaurus, not T. rex. Does anyone
know where the identification of the 33' Kong theropod
as T. rex originated? I guess this explains the three
fingers... :-)
