It is limestone, thus carbonate, in any case, and it is thought that
Ediacara-style cyanobacterial mats grew on it, facilitating preservation by
sealing the carcasses from the water, and explaining why the layers separate
so easily (they don't in Crayssac, which is a pretty similar rock, but was a
beach and not the floor of a lagoon).
