Whew!

Paleocene??!!

As far as I know, Australia's oldest described bat (_Australonycteris clarkae_) is of Eocene age (c.55 MYA). Still very impressive. (Incidentally, based on the structure of a preserved ear bone (periotic), _Australonycteris_ is thought to have been capable of echolocation.)

The full reference is:

Suzanne Hand, Michael Novacek, Henk Godthelp, and Michael Archer (1994). First Eocene bat from Australia. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. 14(3):375-381.

This paper also questions the chiropteran identity of the North American _Wyonycteris chalix_, of Paleocene age.

Hmm... 160 + 15 US$... perhaps I should wait for another torture scandal or oil crisis to make it affordable for me. :->

Hopefully it won't come to that.
