There are land connections between Australian and Antarctica (via what 
is now the Tasman rise) - you can actually see it on the LK map of 
Chicago Atlas Project site but its hard to spot because it's stashed 
away at the extreme bottom right - and between Antarctica and S.America 
until well into the Eocene.

The presence of "condylarths", glyptodonts and phorusrhacoids on Eocene 
Seymour Island graphically illustrates this (well between Antarctica 
and S.America at least)
