Larry Martin and the Origin of "MANIAC"

Although Martin didn't believe in "MANIAC" until recently, he did seem to invent the idea of it way back in 1983. This is the earliest description of "MANIAC" I've seen.

Martin, Larry D., 1983. The Origin and Early Radiation of Birds. pp. 291-338 in Brush, A.H. and Clark, G.A., Jr. (eds.) _Perspectives in Ornithology: Essays presented for the Centennial of the American Ornithological Union_. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

[p. 298-299] "These characters occur in both modern and Mesozoic birds and crocodilians and are apparently primitive for each group, suggesting that a common ancestor could have split very early from the main crocodilian stem. Conversely, they are very complex derived structures in Archosauria and provide a stronger arguement for relationship than any uniting the Theropoda as a whole. If they occurred in one "theropod dinosaur"as they do in almost any crocodilian, the strongest argument at present would be to remove that "dinosaur" from the Theropoda and place it in the avian/crocodilian group."
