Re: People of color at SVP
This brings up something that I found a bit disturbing at school. As the years
passed at NCSU, I noticed the number of black or hispanic students began to
drop in all my biology/zoology courses. Upon graduation, one could count the
number of black students (out of the whole group of hunderds in zoology) on one
or two hands. It seems that biology(and zoology in particular) are not
attracting many minority students at all. Kind of weird.
The majors taken by certain minorities seem to be "self-segregating". Certain
etnic groups tended to take certain majors. Zoology was almost all white,
chemistry nearly all pakistani, indian and other asian ethnic backgrounds.
math was mostly asian and white. The engineering was a decent balance, as were
humanities and social sciences.
The strange thing is that there were almost NO minorities in my higher level
life-science courses. IT is really weird. Through my entire time at NCSU, I
only met ONE black student that was majoring in zoology.
There IS somethingkinda disturbing about it.
