Maruoka & Köberl have found a way to explain the rarity of K-T freshwater 
extinctions despite all the acid rain:

Simms has found a huge area of Rhaetian seismites that point to an 
earthquake above magnitude 10 -- in short, to a pretty humongous impact. 
(Earth is too weak to produce such an event by itself.)
