RE: T. rex Predation
I'm surprised that in this whole discussion so far, no one has made anything
but an oblique reference to Paul's discussion of the "cookie cutter" bite
technique he presented in PDW, as opposed to the allosaurid/ceratosaurid
slice method. I also think that tooth size, as well as shape, may have had
significant bearing on whether a given theropod taxa was a predator that
killed relatively large prey on a 1:1 basis using a more powerful bite and
deeper penetration (the huge teeth of Ceratosaurus nasicornis vs. the smaller
ones of Allosaurus fragilis) or might have one that associated in groups,
using weaker but nonetheless effective bites that killed the prey through
attrition. Presently unprovable, of course, but something to consider.
