Chalk and Awls
Mike Everhart continues his relentless research on the Oceans of
Kansas. His latest find is an amazing article from 1884 by Charles H.
Sternberg on instructions for fossil collecting. It's a wonderful window into
the prehistory of field paleontology.
Interesting is his use of a butcher knife in exposing specimens in the
chalk. A century later another great field man from Kansas and a friend of
mine, Bruce Schumacher, used the same technique to great advantage with a
monster Bowie knife he named "Chuck" in honor C.H.S. DV:
