Yes, well, perhaps the biggest deficiency of this otherwise splendid film was
omitting the scenes with Old Man Willow, the barrow-wight, and Tom Bombadil.
As I recall, Tolkien covered the contingency of simply giving the ring to
Tom. At the council of Elrond, it was decided that in the long run, Tom, not
being interested in the ring or influenced by it, would simply lose it for
one reason or another, and the problem of disposing of it would resurface.
