The Great Dying was written by Kenneth J. Hsü (I bought a copy more than a
decade ago). The acidification effect you mentioned is what he calls a
Strangelove ocean (after the fictional mad scientist). It was published by
Ballantine Books, with ISBN 0-345-34490-1.
