Palaeontologically speaking, I'm sure it's great. But I wouldn't want to
live there. Especially the area around Lark Quarry. If Winton itself is
the middle of nowhere, then what does that make a spot two hours drive
through rough terrain from the middle of nowhere? :)
I myself have done archaeological work in far north-western New South
Wales, so I'm familiar with Lark Quarry-like terrain. It's been
described as the next best thing to actually being on Mars (and it's no
coincidence that so many movies set on Mars have been made in various
parts of out-back Australia). The place I worked, around Tibooburra, was
bearable for a week or two in the cooler months, but I'd go mad living
there all year round. Judging by the "colourful" nature of the locals,
I'm guessing I'm not the only one. Tibooburra is a tiny town, but still
boasts two pubs. The one I spent time in had an entire wall covered in
old hats. No apparent reason was given for the choice of decore. But
then, in that part of the world, perhaps "reason" is in short demand.
To quote Krusty the Klown: "I kid. I kid because I love."
