U. C. Berkeley and Cal Academy openhouses

Upcoming San Francisco bay area events!

Saturday, April 20, 2002 is Cal Day at U. C. Berkeley between 9 and 4.
This is the one day when the public can get a guided tour through the
University of California Museum of Paleontology collections at U. C.
Berkeley, and talk with students about their fossil research.  See
drawer after drawer of carefully catalogued fossils, as well as some
bigger pieces.  Lectures, demos, and microfossil hunts are scheduled.
There will also be tee shirts for sale.  Other events and activities
take place all over campus throughout the day, too, for those of you who
have other interests (yeah, right!).  Get directions and other

By the way, the Lawrence Hall of Science (also on U. C. Berkeley land)
is currently hosting the exhibit, "Jurassic Park: the Life and Death of
Dinosaurs," but only through May 12, 2002.  (Don't hurt me -- I'm just
the messenger boy).  See

Members of the California Academy of Sciences can get a look behind the
scenes at the San Francisco museum on May 8, 2002, from 6-9 pm.  Members
only!  While you're there, you'll also want to check out the "Skulls"
exhibit that has just opened.  See <www.calacademy.org/membership> and
associated links.  Note: U. C. Berkeley has more vertebrate fossils, but
you can see anthropological artifacts, pickled specimens, and the
aquarium behind the scenes here, as well as meeting with members of the
research staff.  Not to mention "Life Through Time" hall (though there
is no behind the scenes tour there).
