Dinosaur Genera List corrections #173

The dinosaur flood of 2001 continues with four new genera for the List. The
first is a new generic name for a specimen previously referred to the bird
genus Archaeopteryx. I track all synonyms and potential synonyms of this
genus in the List, because it is almost perfectly intermediate between
nonavian dinosaurs and birds and thus occurs as a nonavian dinosaur in some
phylogenies. Thanks to Jerry Harris for the citation for this one. Here is
the relevant portion of his email, slightly edited:

Elzanowski, A., 2001. A new genus and species for the largest specimen of
Archaeopteryx," Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 46(4): 519â532.

ABSTRACT: The Solnhofen (Sixth) specimen of Archaeopteryx is assigned to
Wellnhoferia grandis gen. et sp. n. on the basis of qualitative,
size-independent autapomorphies. Wellnhoferia differs from Archaeopteryx in a
short tail with the estimated number of 16â17 caudals; a nearly symmetric
pattern of pedal rays IIâIV with metatarsals II and IV of equal length and
digit IV substantially shorter than in Archaeopteryx; and the number of four
(instead of five) phalanges of pedal digit IV, which most probably results
from a phylogenetic reduction rather than individual variation. A combination
of large size and details of the pelvic limb suggests a locomotor
specialization different from that of Archaeopteryx.

So we add genus #921 to the Dinosaur Genera List:

Wellnhoferia Elzanowski, 2001* [bird]

I will also add the new genus and species to the European dinosaurs section
of the forthcoming second printing of Mesozoic Meanderings #3:

Wellnhoferia Elzanowski, 2001*
    W. grandis Elzanowski, 2001 (Type)

The other three genera are all described in the new book from Indiana
University Press, which will be on sale at the SVP in Bozeman next week. Here
are the relevant citations:

Carpenter, K., ed., 2001. The Armored Dinosaurs, Indiana University Press,
Bloomington & Indianapolis, Indiana: xvi + 1-483+ [final page count not
available].

This volume is, of course, a total "must-have" dinosaur book for any dinosaur
aficionado!

First we have Hesperosaurus mjosi, described in

Carpenter, K., Miles, C. A. & Cloward, K., 2001. "New Primitive Stegosaur
from the Morrison Formation, Wyoming," Chapter 3 of Carpenter, ed., 2001:
55-75.

Then we have Cedarpelta bilbeyhallorum, described in

Carpenter, K., Kirkland, J. I., Burge, D. & Bird, J., 2001. "Disarticulated
Skull of a New Primitive Ankylosaurid from the Lower Cretaceous of Eastern
Utah," Chapter 11 of Carpenter, ed., 2001: 211-238.

And finally Aletopelta coombsi, described in

Ford, T. L. & Kirkland, J. I., 2001. "Carlsbad Ankylosaur (Ornithischia,
Ankylosauria): An Ankylosaurid and Not a Nodosaurid," Chapter 12 of
Carpenter, ed., 2001: 239-260.

Accordingly, we add genera #922-924 to the Dinosaur Genera List:

Aletopelta Ford & Kirkland, 2001
Cedarpelta Carpenter, Kirkland, Burge & Bird, 2001
Hesperosaurus Carpenter, Miles & Cloward, 2001

and we also modify the nomen nudum Bilbeyhallorum, which is now a synonym of
Cedarpelta:

Bilbeyhallorum Burge, Bird, McClelland & Cicconetti, 1999 [nomen nudum =>
Cedarpelta]

All these are new North American armored dinosaurs, so the following species
will be added to that section of Mesozoic Meanderings #3:

Aletopelta Ford & Kirkland, 2001
    A. coombsi Ford & Kirkland, 2001 (Type)

Cedarpelta Carpenter, Kirkland, Burge & Bird, 2001
= Bilbeyhallorum Burge, Bird, McClelland & Cicconetti, 1999 [nomen nudum]
    C. bilbeyhallorum Carpenter, Kirkland, Burge & Bird, 2001 (Type)
NOTE: The name Bilbeyhallorum appeared prematurely as the generic name for
this genus in a published abstract of a talk at the 1999 SVP annual meeting.

Hesperosaurus Carpenter, Miles & Cloward, 2001
    H. mjosi Carpenter, Miles & Cloward, 2001 (Type)

The above changes to MM #3 probably will not be posted at Mike Keesey's
Dinosauricon website until after I return from the SVP meeting in Bozeman,
Montana. Leaving tomorrow in Tracy Ford's Dino-Hunter truck; hope to see you
there!
