Speaking only for myself, as one of the (self-)educated amateur dinosaur
enthousiasts, I can tell you I'm interested in the bigger picture, not just
in the dinosaurs per se, like most people. I just think (pre)history in
general is very interesting and worthwhile to study and get to know it
better and in that general area I happen to think that the Mesozoic is
particularily interesting for different reasons. So definately not just
"dinosaurs because they're dinosaurs".
 
Can't really say much on your other questions. (Back to lurking... ;-)
