Short of a sayance, this could be very difficult.

I had hoped you actually knew first-hand (no pun intended) why - rather than
simply taking somebody's word for it.

On the contrary, that seems the very best reason to question them. You
should perhaps scrutinize the evidence that you say supports your theory as
harshly as the evidence that opposes it.
