No he was referring to the term "Aves" not the term "Bird." "Aves" is the 
name of a Linnean Class, not a vernacular term.

Kiwis have tiny little stubs of wings. I've seen them with my own eyes, and 
they are indeed feathered, warm blooded oviparous vertebrates.
