Collection numbers

Does anyone know if a list of standard abbreviations exist for the acronyms 
used in museum collection numbers (and is that the correct term for them?). 
Some are pretty easy eg MOR, but lots of them don't ring any bells at all 
for me. On the same idea, does anyone have a list of those museums that 
have their catalog databases available on the web? I'm starting to 
accumulate one, but it will take a long time, and if someone has already 
done it and can supply a list or partial list I'd certainly appreciate it.
