Book with Matternes African fossil mammal art

Back in days of yore, the 70s, there was a small format book that included 
art by Jay Matternes. The images were of Pleistocence African mammals 
including Deinotherium chasing a stalk eyed hippo, extinct giraffids, 
superpigs, an African tiger dining on an eland and probably some other stuff. 
Cannot quite remember the subject, may have been about African wildlife or 
fossil hominids. I think it was produced by National Geographic although 
someone there just looked and could not track it down.
