You're right, there is new data. Bolides are now being held responsible for 
not just the KT extinction but also the PT extinction and the TJ extinction. 
Nothing but global phenomena (extraterrestrial, climatic, massive volcanic) 
can be responsible for global extinctions. Extinction via ecological 
competition is too sporadic and local a phenomenon to have a global compass.
