Re: [Making Up Names _versus_ Emending Names
Ken Kinman (kinman@usa.net) writes:
<Echiura is a perfect example of how emended names should be
assigned to the original author:
Echiura Sedgwick 1898 orth. emend. Stephen 1965.>
This is still not clarifying what Stephen emends the name to.
In an emendation, the name can follow the system thusly to avoid
_any_ possibility of error, even though the space is greater:
*Utahraptor* Kirkland, Gaston, & Burge, 1993
*Utahraptor ostrommaysorum* emend. Olshevsky, 1994 (?) from
*Utahraptor ostrommaysi* = Kirkland, Gaston, & Burge, 1993
or
*Therapsida* _____, __
*Therapsiformes* emend. _____, __
The original nomen is retained as the primary usage. One can
argue logic in retaining the emendation subsequently.
