Dinosaur Genera List corrections #160
Well, this one has been all over the popular press, so there's no need to say
any more:
Genus #905 becomes
Paralititan J. B. Smith, Lamanna, Lacovara, Dodson, J. R. Smith, Poole,
Giegengack & Attia, 2001
The reference is:
Joshua B. Smith, Matthew C. Lamanna, Kenneth J. Lacovara, Peter Dodson,
Jennifer R. Smith, Jason C. Poole, Robert Giegengack, & Yousry Attia, 2001.
"A Giant Sauropod Dinosaur from an Upper Cretaceous Mangrove Deposit in
Egypt," Science 292(5522): 1704-1706 [June 1, 2001].
Also add to the list of African dinosaurs in the forthcoming Mesozoic
Meanderings #3 second printing:
Paralititan J. B. Smith, Lamanna, Lacovara, Dodson, J. R. Smith, Poole,
Giegengack & Attia, 2001
P. stromeri J. B. Smith, Lamanna, Lacovara, Dodson, J. R. Smith, Poole,
Giegengack & Attia, 2001 (Type)
It's a big titanosaurid from the Bahariya Formation of Egypt. Material is
incomplete but distinctive, including a humerus, shoulder girdle, and caudal
centra. Somewhat smaller than Argentinosaurus.
This is the beginning of a flood of new dinosaur genera whose descriptions
will appear during the summer and fall. Maybe a dozen or more altogether.
