Actually, the machine used in the movie really does exist, and it does work
very much as described in the movie, translating data into sculpted foam or
plastic forms one layer at a time. Currently the plan is to make these
machines practical for home use eventually so that users can literally
"downbuild" bought products or models of products for display (within
limitations, of course) So at least that bit isn't so preposterous....
