I think that Dr. Crichton probably added the poison (but not the frills, which 
were an invention of the movie) because he read somewhere that Dilophosaurus's 
jaws were rather lightly built and slender.  Well, the reasoning goes,
if it couldn't have killed an animal with its jaws alone, it must have had 
poison or something similar.  This is conjecture, of course, but Dr. Crichton 
did the same thing in _The Lost World_ with Carnotaurus, which also have
rather slender lower mandibles.

BTW: Crichton also had the dilophosaurs hoot, like owls, which I thought was 
rather cool. "Is that owls?  Why are they hooting during the daytime?"
"That's NOT owls!"
