Mantell or Buckland?
A note from Chris McGowan in response to a letter asking for
clarification, reveals the following:
"Here is the resolution to the apparent puzzle. Both Mantell and
Buckland
underwent post-mortem examinations. Part of Mantell's vertebral
column was
subsequently put on display at the Royal College of Surgeons Hunterian
Museum,
as recorded in the literature (there is a detailed account of the post
mortem).
Most of the museum was destroyed by incendiary bombs during WW II but
some parts
of the collection was saved. I went searching in the rebuilt Hunterian
Museum
to see if I could find Mantell's vertebral remains. There was no sign,
and my
enquies led me to conclude it was a casualty of the bombing. But I did
come
across a preserved specimen on public display containing the base of
Buckland's
skull, and the first few cervical vertebrae."
Best regards,
Chris McGowan
