    I too fail to understand why females would need to be gaudy when they 
are chemically broadcasting their fertility.  Whether they were matrilinear 
and/or dominant seems to be comparatively irrelevant.  The males don't need 
visual signals when it's the female's smell that is "driving them crazy".
    If anything, I would think female dominance would actually encourage 
the development of male sexual displays, since dominant females could be 
very choosy about their choice of mate.
