palatal bones in birds

Hi all, (back on the list after quite a long time)

I had been trying to identify a couple of bones(paired) I had collected in association( but not articolated ) with a bird skeleton some time ago, but unsuccesfully; today, while working on another specimen, the same odd-looking (at least to my untrained eyes) bones have literally dropped off of a bird skull.
I'm sure they come from the palatal region and I can exclude the palatines and pterygoids, but being not expert on the palatal condition of modern birds I can't say what they can or cannot be.

These are elongated, tapering  and contact each other rostrally and are slightly curved; posteriorly there's a laterally convex (and medially concave)process, much thinner than the rest of the bone.

I did a sketch of the original pair using the good old paintbrush when I first found it and I will send it to anybody willing to be of some help and unable to identify it by just reading this email.
(I think there may be some errors because I've just realized that what I interpreted as being the dorsal side may be  the ventral one and vice versa...)

thanks in advance for any insight
