I'm not so willing to draw a hard dichotomy between people and the tools that
they use. The internet is a collection of computers and humans interacting
with those computers and with other humans. It is the combination of that
network of hardware *and* social interaction that I meant when I spoke of the
internet playing havoc.

And I agree entirely.
The expectation for instant gratification nurtured by the internet (in this
case, the instant aquisition of data) is often at odds with established (and
justifiably established) protocol.
But this is a dead horse and has been flogged on the DML many times before.
