Australian fish
Dear List,
I am posting the following reply to a request from yesterday on behalf of
Adriana López-Arbarello, who is not a member of the list, but knows
considerably more about these things than I do...

Yesterday somebody sent a picture of an Australian fish, asking for its
identification. Some others suggested that it could be an specimen of
Cooyoo.
I think that the fish in the picture looks much more similar to
Pachyrhizodus marathonensis Etheridge 1905 (redescribbed by Bartholomai,
1969). I cannot see details clearly in the picture, but look for example at
the relative postion of the quadrate-mandibular articulation, the shape of
the supramaxilla, circumborbital and preopercular bones.
Check the following papers:
Bartholomai, A. 1969. The Loweer Cretaceous elopoid fish Pachyrhizodus
marathonensis (Etheridge Jr.). In: Stratigraphy and Palaeontology. K.S.W.
Campbell, ed., Aust. Nat. Univ. Press, Canberra: 249-263.
Lees, T. and Bartholomai, A. 1987. Study of a Lower Cretaceous
actinopterygian (Class Pisces) Cooyoo australis from Queensland, Australia.
Mem. Qd. Mus. 25(1): 177-192.
Greetings,
Adriana
