And I'll make the point again that generalization in dentition was new
towards the end of the Cretaceous.  Until then, most (all?) teeth were
specialized for insectivory.

If by "end of the Cretaceous" you mean "last 15 million years of the Cretaceous", then this is more or less true for *mammals*. Generalists did *not* appear suddenly in the last half million years of the Cretaceous, which is the time span during which factors causing the extinctions must occur.
