Re: New dinosaur from South America
Yeah, I read about this earlier and am in the process of writing a short news
report for my site.
Anyway, I recall the find of the supposed Giganotosaurus pack from some short
rumors last year. Actually, I interviewed Rodolfo Coria last April, I believe,
and he still at the time was thinking they were Giganotosaurus fossils. From
the article I take it that the two species were very closely related, which
should tell us some interesting things about South America.
Having two 40+ foot long predators in the same area, plus two 100+ foot long
sauropods makes for an interesting environment. I am not quite sure if both
Giganotosaurus and this new guy lived together, but even if not the
evolutionary scenario is still very interesting. Having two huge sauropods:
Argentinosaurus and the newly discovered one, makes it seem like the evolution
of these huge theropods is likely tied in somehow, but as a amateur,
non-scientist, I have no idea why. Perhaps these large theropods were evolving
to increasingly larger sizes because of the evolving sauropods, or the other
way around.
Maybe Dr. Holtz knows more about this.
