Such rosettes are apparently a spinosaur apomorphy. All known spinosaurs for
which the skull is well enough known to tell (e.g., Baryonyx, Suchomimus,
Spinosaurus [barely], Irritator, Cristatusaurus, Angaturama) had them. They
seem to resemble the separate, droopy premaxillae of Dilophosaurus and may be
directly derived from them.
