Dinosaur Genera List corrections #144
The June 2000 issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology has arrived,
and with it come the descriptions of two new theropod dinosaurs:
de Klerk, W. J., Forster, C. A., Sampson, S. D., Chinsamy, A. & Ross, C. F.,
2000. "A new coelurosaurian dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of South
Africa," Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology 20(2): 324-332 [June 27, 2000].
This paper describes Nqwebasaurus thwazi, a small basal coelurosaur
(Theropoda, Tetanurae, Coelurosauria) from an unnamed member of the Kirkwood
Formation, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Mainly the appendicular
skeleton, very well preserved. This is, I believe, the small theropod
nicknamed "Kirky" in popular accounts.
Allain, R. & Taquet, P., 2000. "A new genus of Dromaeosauridae (Dinosauria,
Theropoda) from the Upper Cretaceous of France," Journal of Vertebrate
Paleontology 20(2): 404-407 [June 27, 2000].
This paper describes Pyroraptor olympius from an ungual phalanx and other
foot and limb bones, a couple of vertebrae, and teeth from the Upper
Campanian to Lower Maastrichtian of Provence, France. The material is clearly
dromaeosaurid.
Accordingly, we add as genera #887 and 888 to the Dinosaur Genera List:
Nqwebasaurus de Klerk, Forster, Sampson, Chinsamy & Ross, 2000
Pyroraptor Allain & Taquet, 2000
In the list of African dinosaurs in Mesozoic Meanderings #3 second printing
will appear
Nqwebasaurus de Klerk, Forster, Sampson, Chinsamy & Ross, 2000
N. thwazi de Klerk, Forster, Sampson, Chinsamy & Ross, 2000â
To the list of European dinosaurs in the same reference will be added
Pyroraptor Allain & Taquet, 2000
P. olympius Allain & Taquet, 2000â
Finally, I should mention the new paper
Zhou Z.-H. & Wang X.-L., 2000. "A new species of Caudipteryx from the Yixian
Formation of Liaoning, northesast China," Vertebrata PalAsiatica 38(2):
111-127 [April 2000].
This describes the new species
Caudipteryx dongi Zhou & Wang, 2000
which will be added to the genus Caudipteryx in the list of Asiatic dinosaurs
in Mesozoic Meanderings #3 second printing. The species is distinguished from
the type species C. zoui by its somewhat larger size but smaller sternum.
Feather impressions(!) abound. The authors also erect a new family,
Caudipteridae, within Theropoda > Maniraptora, for the genus Caudipteryx.
(Alas, the family name is incorrectly formed and should have been spelled
Caudipterygidae, but under Article 29.4 of the new 2000 ICZN, the original
spelling Caudipteridae is to be maintained in spite of this because it is
properly formed from the genus Caudipteryx as specified in Article 29.3.3.).
The Dinosaur Genera List currently resides at my website
http://members.aol.com/Dinogeorge/index.html
which also contains a description of and ordering information for the first
printing of Mesozoic Meanderings #3, 60 copies of which remain in stock as of
this writing.
