I know that turtles and monontremes (and I'm pretty sure that crocodiles and
lizards) have soft-shelled eggs.  If you were to squeeze one, it would bend, not
break.  I'm not sure what good having a hard-shelled egg could possibly do for 
the
parent, but I like the idea that the eggs were harder so they could support the
weight of a brooding mother.
