I believe it is from the Greek: "Armored" or
_Shielded."  Here's why:

The large shield carried by ancient Greek soldiers,
(until they adopted the very long two-handed spear
made famous by Alexander's pezetairoi, requiring a
smaller shield) was called the _Hoplon_.  Hence
"Hoplite," a heavily armored man.  It was quite a big shield.
