Of course, one could imagine that Allosaurs learned by observation: they
see
daddy get spiked and decide that plate-backed things with spikey tails are
best
avoided.
Perhaps allosaurs were cleverer than that. Maybe big theropods were
intelligent enough to figure out intuitively (as opposed to empirically -
and painfully) that spikes = sharp = hurt = bad. In the same way, an
allosaur wouldn't need to observe another allosaur falling off a cliff to
know it could be very hazardous to one's health.
