Re: Holbotia

Fred Ruhe reported:

<I have two references of Holbotia

 1.
Evgeny N. Kurochkin, 1994. Synopsis and Evolution of
Mesozoic Birds. _Journal Für Ornithologie_ 135: 332.

In this abstract he calles the bird Kholbotiaka:

"Beginning in the 1980's, an explosive discovery of
fossil birds occurred beginning with the new subclass
Enantiotnithes and the carinate bird Ambiortus. The
Enantiornithes appear ro be a diverse taxon water,
cursorial and aboreal birds, existing since the Early
Cretaceous and including the Chinese Sinornis and
Cathayornis, Mongolian Kholbotiaka, .......>

Sounds like it was translated from the Russian. The
name "Kholbotiaka" is how you'd write "Holbotia" in
Russian using the Cyrillic system, where _kh_ is used
for _h_, and a few others. It's a translation-spelling
thing, so I don't know if it counts as an official
misspelling for your list, George.

[kohl-_boh_-tee-AH-kah; hohl-boh-TYEE-ah or
hohl-BOH-shee-ah?]. But, of course, I'm not an expert
on Russian, as I'm just learning. Etymol.:
"Kholbotiaka" (Russian) -- after the Mongolian
locality Kolbotu [Russian, Kholbotu] and Latin -ia
with Russian -ka (a particle modifying force of
imperative or expressing descision or intention, for
example: daytye-ka proyti = "let me pass, please" or
skazhi-ka mnye = "do tell me", as my dictionary tells
me), so the name as you cite Kurochkin's use of could
be translated "from Kolbotu" with a hint of
uncertainty; or, "it could be called _Kholbotia_,"
which is essentially the same. I will try to get
something more certain on it, unless Ekaterina or Ben
can to help.
