In the US, it essentially dates back to the English-language publication of
Hennig's work in German on phylogenetic systematics:
Hennig, W., 1966. Phylogenetic Systematics, University of Illinois Press,
Urbana, Illinois: 263 pp.
Don't have a ref handy to Hennig's original work in German, but someone else
on the list will no doubt have it.
In a nutshell, it's the synthesis of classification principles with
evolutionary theory.
