'formica' = 'ant' in LATIN, NOT Greek.

My kitchen countertop is covered with "formica". ( Happens every year about
this time 8^). Thing is, I completely gutted the kitchen when I bought the
house, including the walls AND floor, including the floor joists which were
rotten.. How did the ants find their way back to the countertop (which is
made of wood ...by the way) without a chemical trail to follow?? This
happened soon after construction ended, (not really enough time for food
particles to accumulate in nooks and crannies). (and adjacent rooms were
also refinished with new sheetrock, and varnished floors).
Do they have a sense of spatial navigation after all?
