Alan and George both make good points. The application of the term proto- to 
anything implies a primitive state. But maybe Sinosauropteryx sported a 
highly derived form of covering that came from a proto- form of something 
else. And as I understand Alan, there may have been proto- forms of all the 
different feather morphologies, not just one that gave rise to all the 
others. Amen.
