re: cloning of extinct Huia

I have to agree with the anti-cloning folks. Usually when we drive something
to extinction we destroy the supporting ecosystem, too. Has anyone thought
of a place for this thing to live yet? Will it just live in a zoo like a
hybrid pet? Will they have enough genetic variation to keep a real
population going? Why are we bringing this thing back? For the sake of the
bird or for the sake of a school and tribe that wants it mascot back?

mistakes man has made in the past.

Even a better question for thought, does this give us an excuse to be
careless with endangered species now because we may be able to cobble
together a cloned animal? You all know humans are short-sighted morons when
it comes to the enviroment. Any excuse will do. "Technology will save us,
who cares what we do now!!"

They should spend the money protecting the native wildlife of New Zeland,
which in many cases is unique, and in danger of extinction by non-native
animals.
