If you're looking for obscure books, there also are sites which list used
books offered by various dealers; I used one http://www.bibliofind.com/ for
a (non-dinosaur) book and found a reasonable copy. Another is
http://www.bookfinder.com/
I don't know how widespread the problem is, but at least some on-line
stores list books that are nonexistent or unavailable without clearly
indicating their unavailability. (Example: The Ages of Earth, a 4-billion
year Atlas of Our Planet, by Jeff Hecht and Christopher R. Scotese, which
will not be published until next year.) Some places may have remainders of
out of print books, but other listings may simply be incorrect.
