Dinosaur Plots by Leonard Krishtalka Item #68666016
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=68666016

Dinosaur Plots & Other Intrigues in Natural History is a gloves-off
history of dinosaur-related discoveries (and much other stuff) by a
leading paleontologist at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. So: Were
the dinosaurs done in by an asteroid? ("Catastrophists are intellectual
ballerinas in loose tights," he says.) Is Archaeopteryx actually a fake?
And why are there dinosaurs buried in Central Park? The author has a
strong sense of the absurd and a nice, dry wit. Very good science
writing -- informative and fun! Published by William Morrow, 1989,
hardcover, and in perfect condition

1888 US Geological Survey Annual, A++ MAPS Item #69599243
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=69599243

TENTH ANNUAL REPORT of the UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY to the
SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR 1888-'89 BY J.W. Powell Director
Part I - GEOLOGY 778 pages, heavily illustrated with maps and plates
Including one large fold-out topographic survey map of the United
States, dated 1888-9 Published by the Government Printing Office, 1890

This large 12' x 7" volume contains detailed reports on the geological
research activities of the USGS for fiscal year 1888-'89.Heavily
illustrated with color plates, sketch maps and a large independent
fold-out map of the United States kept in a pocket in the rear board.
The director's report includes sections on progress of geologic work in
all regions throughout the country, progress in paleontologic work on
fossils from each major era, work in chemistry and physics, petrography,
mining statistics and technology, and recent publications of the
division.
Features a lengthy report on the swampland of the United States, with
particular attention to the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina and
Virginia. Subchapters of this report include types of swamps found in
the US, topography of the Great Dismal, its vegegation, animal life and
types of fossils found in the swamp beds. Includes a nice tipped in
color sketch map of the Great Dismal Swamp, measuring app. 12" x 8".
Also presented is a paper on the Penokee Iron-Bearing series of Michigan
and Wisconsin, with a fold out geologic chart of the region, plus a
color-coded geologic map of Michigan.
Finally there is a lengthy report on the fauna of the Lower Campbrian
or Olenellus Zone, with numerous plates showing fossils recovered from
that period.
The fold-out map of the United States is in nearly pristine condition-
only defect is very slight staining at crease edges from the dye of the
book cover. It is as nice a map of the US from the 1800s I have ever
seen. It measures app. 30" by 22", and is color coded to show surveying
progress throughout the US. It is titled in the lower right-hand corner,
"Map of the United States, Showing the Progress of the Topographic
Survey During the Fiscal Year 1888-9"
The book is in generally good condition. Would rate as very good
except the rear cover is weak at the inside hinge and needs reinforcing.
The cloth cover is sound and exterior hinges are all firm. Minor
staining on the exterior cover but negligibly so. Plates and text are
all very good.
