Kirky? (Marysaurus Kirkaldiensis?)
Ok, as long as everyone is bringing up When Dinosaurs Ruled, I have
to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the program, but not for its content. I
suggest you all grab a bunch of your dinophile friends, get together with a
couple beers, and MST3K the heck out of that show. The script varies from
corny to downright inaccurate, the sound bites seem overedited and are often
re-used, you almost never get to see any actual fossils ( [tap tap tap]
"Umm... you do plan to have FOSSILS on your fossil show? ... Hello...?"),
the poor scientists seem to have always been cornered on a bad day, and the
graphics... well, we all know about those. You can have a ball! Pay careful
attention to Jeff Goldblum's narration for added amusement.
Anyway, on to the crux of my posting: the only really new thing I
learned from two hours of this show concerned the existance of a new small
theropod from South Africa (Early/Mid Jurassic?). I had never heard of this
little fellow, dubbed "Kirky" in the all-to-prevalent modern fashion
(whatever happened to "that big guy" or UUVP-91514 or "Joe's ceratopsian"?).
It looked to be a bit larger than a _Compsognathus_, beautifully preserved,
articulated and nearly complete. Does anybody know anything more about this
beast? Naturally, I do not want to see privaleged information splattered
about the list, I just wanted to know what else has been made public.
As a side note, did anyone watching the show notice the rather
shallowly curved and less-than-laterally compressed ?pedal unguals shown in
the quarter-second shot of the "Kirky" skeleton? Hmm...

P.S. Raise your hand if you couldn't stop drooling at the beautiful
_Rahonavis_ remains. Whoever prepared that material needs to be bronzed.
