Beautiful Birds: Masterpieces from the Hill Ornithological Collection
Cornell University does it again. This makes a fine compliment to The Life
of Birds by David Attenborough currently on view here in the States. From the
same folks who brought you Fuertes on line. The physical exhibition runs at
Cornell till 9/30/99.
"On view in Cornell University"s Carl A. Kroch Library is the exhibition
"Beautiful Birds" which traces the development of ornithological illustration
in the 18th and 19th centuries and highlights the changing techniques - from
wood and metal engraving to chromolithography - during that period."
"The Division of Rare and Manuscript collections has developed a web site
that provides not only a "virtual tour" of the gallery but also an online
guide to the entire Hill Ornithology collection and a database of images from
the books."

Included are works by Joseph Smit, one of the earliest dinosaur artists.
Why can't we have a similar collection for our early artwork? Dan Varner.
