Re: bigger that the king?
It is debatable as to whether either of these animals is truly larger than
_T. rex_. The mount of _Giganotosaurus carolinii_ we have here in Phila.
(PA, USA) is slightly longer than our _T. rex_. I believe the actual
difference is less than 15 cm (~6 inches). (Some people say that _G. is up
to 1.5 m (~5 feet) longer, and 2 tons heavier). The skull of _G._ is much
longer than _T. rex_ - by nearly 30 cm (~1 foot), and its 3-clawed forelimbs
are larger than _T. rex_, but _T. rex is taller at the hips (more than 15 cm
[~6 inches]), and _T. rex_'s head is wider and more robust than _G._'s.
_G._ was found in Argentina in 1995. Its skull is listed as 1.65 m long.
_T. rex_'s teeth are thicker and more robust as well.
_Carcharodontosaurus saharicus_ was originally named in 1931, although the
specimen was discovered in 1927. It was only very scrapy, framentary pieces
of skeleton. In 1995 (I believe), Paul Sereno and his team found a nearly
complete skeleton of it. (Its skull is around 1.5 m long [~5 feet]). {The
animal whose remains were destroyed during WWII was _Spinosaurus_ and any
further remains of it are usually only scraps, or teeth}.
Recent reports of an even larger _T. rex_ have yet to be confirmed. (It
is still coming out of the ground??)
How tall were they?:
Most older-style models of dinosaurs, including _T. rex_, show the
bipedal dinosaurs standing with their heads held high and their tails
dragging on the ground (or used to lean on). Shown this way, _T. rex was
5.5 meters high (~ 18 feet).
Modern models of dinosaurs show the bipedal ones with their tails
straight back and parallel to the ground, and the head only a bit higher
than the hips. It is therefore considered proper to measure these animals'
heights at their hips. _T. rex_ was about 4 meters (13 feet) tall at the
hips. _Giganotosaurus_ was about 3.5 meters (~11.5 feet).
_Carcharodontosaurus_ apparently was about 3.8 - 4.2 meters tall at the
hips - approximately the same height as _T. rex_.
Tom Holtz would be able to elaborate further on these guys, and correct
any mistakes I've made.
