Phil has been doing the work in conjunction with Nathan Myhrvold, who is
also on this list. They ran extensive computer simulations on the question.
(Nathan is the Chief Technical Officer of Microsoft - for his day job).
Nathan gave a talk here in Phila. at the DinoFest Symposium (this past
April) concerning the sauropod tails creating sonic booms, and he
demonstrated the effect using a whip.
